UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, Nottingham (Sat. 7th Mar.)

Seven of our young athletes represented Kent at the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships on a tough, challenging course, all putting in fantastic performances, writes Mark Newell.

The highlight of the day came from Charlotte Foster (U15G) who finished an impressive 15th from a field of 313; fourth scorer for Kent. Lizzie Sanders came home in a respectable 76th place. In the under 13 boy's race, Max Foster finished high up the field in 49th position - unfortunately he missed out on 4th place for Kent and a team gold medal.

In the other age groups, Ayotunde Dauda placed 79th in the under 15 boy's race (second scorer for Kent) and Meri Cummins (U17W) put in a solid performance to place inside the top third of her race in 82nd position. Emer Tynan put in a strong run to finish 29th (second for Kent) in the under 29 women's race. Amelia Lawrence was our other representative in this race, placing 73rd overall.

For most of our young athletes, this was their final cross country race before moving into the track and field season. We do however have a few making the trip to Liverpool this coming weekend for the English Schools Cross Country Championships. We wish them all good luck in their respective races.

British Masters Winter Throws Championships, Oxford (Sat.7th / Sun. 8th Mar.)

Warwick Dixon (M90) delivered a commanding performance at the British Masters Winter Throws Championships, leaving the event with a clean sweep of five gold medals and a new British age‑group record. The standout moment came in the javelin, where Dixon extended his own national record with a throw of 15.37m. Dixon’s dominance continued across the full throws programme. He recorded 6.77m in the shot, 18.64m in the discus, 21.01m in the hammer, and 7.92m in the weight throw - performances that secured him gold in every event he contested.

Natalie Mann came away with silver in the hammer (32.80m), javelin (19.12m) and weight throw (9.46m).

Paddock Wood Half Marathon (Sun. 8th Mar.)

A cool misty morning with virtually no wind greeted us at the start of the Paddock Wood Half this year; the Kent countryside did not look at its best but these were ideal running conditions, reports Clem Dixon, perhaps an explanation for why so many of the twenty-three Cambridge Harriers in the field achieved personal bests. Maybe the new Soar vests, a great many of which were being worn for the first time, might also have had something to do with it. Or perhaps it was just down to all the hard winter training.

I had hoped to list those setting new PBs but unfortunately it takes weeks rather than days for results to appear on the new improved Power of 10 system. However I can tell you that Danny Kendall was first man for the club in 1:13:57 with Emily Tullo first woman in 1:29:18. This was the first qualifying race of the year in our Grand Prix competition which is based on age graded performance. Danny is top with an impressive 86 points, followed by Rose Baker, winner in the last two years, on 84. The Lydd 20 miler (and half marathon) is the next event on the list. Emily Tullo - Olesya Golovina - Rose Baker

Cambridge Half Marathon (Sun. 8th Mar.)

A massive personal best run for Oktawiusz Kawecki in the Cambridge half, clocking 1:28:45 knocking nearly fourteen minutes from his previous best set at the same event in 2025.
