The Anglo Celtic Plate 100km, Limerick (IRL) (Sat. 21st Mar.)

At the Anglo Celtic Plate 100 km Home Countries Team Championships, held at the University of Limerick in Ireland, Hugh Tibbs made an impressive debut in an England vest.

The race began at 8am, with competitors tackling 51 laps of a 1.9 km loop around the university’s sports grounds. Tibbs, already gaining recognition as one of England’s top trail ultrarunners, delivered a strong performance to finish third with a time of 6:42:29.

SIAB Schools International Cross Country, Bangor, Wales (Sat. 21st Mar.)

Charlotte Foster delivered a determined performance while representing England at the SIAB Schools International Cross Country in Bangor, Wales, reports Mark Newell. Competing on a challenging 3.1km undulating course against teams from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, she stayed consistently in contention, holding 5th or 6th place for much of the race.

Although she briefly dropped to eighth near the end, Charlotte showed impressive resilience, producing a strong sprint over the final 200 meters to finish 5th in 11:15. This made her the second scorer for England.

The overall team competition was extremely close, but England secured victory, finishing just three points ahead of Scotland.

Kent Indoor Championships, Lee Valley (Sat. 21st / Sun. 22nd Mar.)

This event marked the indoor season and for the juniors probably the last opportunity to run as an U15 or U17 ahead of the age group changes on 1st April, reports Mick Bond. As in previous year's it was also a happy hunting ground for club athletes looking for medals and good form before the outdoor season kicks off. Organised with Middlesex and Hertfordshire County AA’s the event is three county championships in one leading to a busy stadium and crammed spectator areas and the unofficial title of the “Tri Counties Championships”. New this year was live streaming on YouTube and live results on Roster which added greatly to the event. You can watch the full 16 hours here if you want to.

Mel Tyler R.I.P

Mel Tyler sadly passed away on 13th March at the age of 88 after a short illness. Mel had been a member of Cambridge Harriers for over 65 years.  He was a good all round athlete and would compete at any event, track or field if required to earn as many points as possible for the Club, but his best events were middle and long distance.  He carried on competing as a vet for many years before injury forced him to retire.  He still continued to have a run every Sunday morning in Greenwich Park well into his Seventies.

Mel was Membership Secretary for a number of years as well as auditing the Club accounts. A true Cambridge Harrier through and through.

Mel was well enough to attend a get together in November at the Clubhouse, when Liz Barnes returned from New Zealand for a visit, enabling him to catch up with many Cambridge Harriers that he hadn't seen for many years.

Funeral details: Tuesday 31st March, 2.45pm at Falconwood Crematorium, then on to Blackheath Golf Club, Court Road,  SE9 5AF.
