Track & Field Roundup

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

We start this weeks roundup in Tallin (EST) at the European U20 Athletic Championships. Automatic qualification for the triple jump final was set at 15.55m. Daniel Falode, jumping in Group B, qualified for the final with his first jump, recording a seasons best of 15.67m. In the final the following day Daniel produced his best jump in round 3 with a leap of 15.81m to finish 5th.

Back on home soil, in Bedford, the club came away from the England Athletics Senior Track & Field Championships with four medals. Sabrina Sinha (U23) took silver in the women's 1500m to add the U23 title she won in June. Sabrina ran at the head of the race, but coming off the final bend the whole field was taken by surprise by the final kick of Wakefield's Lucy Robinson. Sabrina battled all the way to the line to claim silver in 4:21.34 just shy of her seasons best. The 3000m Walk was held during the hottest part of the day on the Sunday with the temperature at around 31 degrees. Luc Legon secured silver and Hannah (U20) & Christian (U17) Hopper picked up bronze in their respective races.

The Club's under 13 and 15 age group squad were in action at Erith in the UK Youth Development League where they finished 3rd behind Blackheath & Bromley and Medway & Maidstone. Michael Bridge added 65cm to his U13B shot club record with a throw of 11.62m. Daniel Nyong (U15B) ran AAA Grade 1 times in the 200m (24.0) and 300m (37.9s). New recruit from the Greenwich Schools Championships, Kema Jr. Onyemaechi (U13B) clocked 9.9s to win the B string 75m, a time which sees him ranked currently in the UK Top 10 for 2021. Joshua Wellings (U13B) reduced his 800m PB by almost 3 seconds to 2:24.8 and contributed good points in the long jump and javelin. Another recruit from the Greenwich Schools Championships, Nneamaka Odu (U15G), produced a throw of 8.90m in the shot in her first competition for the club.

The second 2021 Sutcliffe Park Track & Field Night organised by the club in conjunction with the British Milers Club took place on Wednesday 14th July, with another large entry and a warm evening resulting in a number of PBs for club members. In the first track event, the 3000m walk, there were PBs for Hannah Hopper (15:18.50) and Mark Ashby (18:37.26). Ciara McGinty (U15G) and Oliver Cook (U13B) both recorded windy PBs of 13.82s and 14.16s respectively. Luke Bridges (U15B) came away with two PBs in the 400m (64.09s) and 800m (2:37.33).
