Kent Champs – U13 Girls

Updated: Jan 13, 2021

Similarly to the under 13s boys (great job by the way!), the turn-out at Erith was pretty low too for the girls with only 6 girls competing in the whole of the weekend’s championships. Well done to all those who turned up for both days and thank you also to all the parents and supporters who helped out as officials as well, much appreciated. It was a bit touch and go as to whether or not some of the under 13s events were actually going to take place due to the lack of officials early on in the morning events, (some events even momentarily being cancelled over the tannoy!) but Cambridge Harriers’ parents quickly stepped up to the mark and filled in the gaps in order to allow the cancelled events to take place, so a massive thank you to all those who volunteered.

This didn’t dampen the girls’ spirits and each and every one of them worked really hard and gave a really good account of themselves, whilst trying to cover as many events as they could.

On the track – Cleo came 2 nd in her 150m heat and was really unlucky just to miss out on the finals, Amirat came 3 rd in her heat and Kacey came 4 th in hers with a new pb. The 1200m race saw Madeline come in 4 th place in a straight final, just missing out on the medals, but a good run all the same. Next up for Madeline was the 800m on Sunday where she came second in her heat with a new PB of 2.37.39, unfortunately it wasn’t enough to qualify for the final which saw only 6 runners go through. Katie was another one of our athletes who just missed out on the medals by a fraction with her javelin 4 th place throw of 21.76, Katie has another year in the under 13s so we’re really looking forward to seeing her compete next year.

We had two athletes in the high jump event which had a very large field of 16 girls taking part. Amirat gave a really good account of herself coming 5 th overall in Kent and managing to equal her pb of 1.25m, unfortunately following a really bad land on the bar and injury to her back, (although she did bravely try to carry on) she wasn’t able to continue, and in fact her injury took her out of the rest of the day’s events. Kacey did really well and won the high jump event with a jump of 1.42m earning herself title of Kent high jump Champion and a trophy to boot.

Back to the track where we had the 75m sprints, Cleo qualified 1 st in her heat to make it through to the finals where she came 5 th in a very strong field of sprinters, Kacey came 4 th in the same heat and although didn’t qualify for the final, managed to gain yet another new PB. Next up was Katie who came 5 th place in her heat in the 70m hurdles against a very strong field.

The 2k walk saw Hannah come in 5 th place with a fantastic new PB of 13.25.63 from her previous time of 14.14.9, so a big well done, back to the field where Kacey took 3 rd place and bronze medal in the shot put event with a throw of 8.44m, Cleo unfortunately just missed out on qualifying and making it into the final 8 throwers, but still managed to gain 9 th place in Kent with a throw of 7.30.

A good weekend was had by all, lots of experience gained with a few new PBs too, well done girls.
