English Schools Race Walking Champs

Updated: Jan 13, 2021

The club had four race walkers entered for the 44th English Schools Championships all representing London Schools.

In the Junior Boys 3000 metres Alex Macheath, in his first English Schools Championship, tracked the race favourite before unleashing a devastating final lap to take the title in 16:41.23.

Also making her debut in these championships Hannah Hopper contested the Junior Girls 3000 metres. Early on Hannah was lying in fifth position before gradually working her way through the field and was in second place as she entered the home straight. The leader was just out of reach. Hannah appeared secure in silver medal position, but the Kent athlete behind her put in a final surge making up 25 metres and pipping her on the line to take the silver by less than a second. Hannah finished with a 30 second personal best of 17:31.91. Hannah has improved her time for the 3000 metre walk by over 2 minutes this season.

Lucy Lewis Ward finished 4th in the Intermediate Girls 3000 metres in 17:05.15. Lucy was always racing for the minor medals, but her fitness levels were not as high as when she took bronze in the School International in July, and she was unable to respond when the other girls went away from her.

The fourth member of the quartet, Sophie Lewis Ward, was unable to compete as she had started her studies at Edinburgh University the previous Monday and was unable to travel down, although this had been the intention.
