London Youth Games Cross Country, Parliament Hill (Sat. 16th Nov.)
Many of our young athletes represented the boroughs of Greenwich or Lewisham at the London Youth Games Cross Country Championships, reports Mark Newell. For most, this was their first time running in this event over the iconic course of Parliament Hill. Conditions underfoot were exceptionally dry, making for fast running over the relatively short courses.
The highlight of the day came from Charlotte Foster (pictured below) in the under 13 girls race, which was also the largest field of the day with 246 finishers. Leading from start to finish to claim a fine victory.
With numbers from the club too numerous to mention individually, congratulations to all who were selected to represent their boroughs and well done on your performances. (Results)
Amelia Lawrence, under 20, has taken part many times in the London Youth Games Cross Country Championships. Being too old for this event now, she ran in the London Cross Country Championships for the club as part of our senior women's team. 217 finished, with Amelia finishing 24th (first for the club) and more importantly, first in the under 20 age category, making her under 20 women's London Cross Country Champion for 2024. A fantastic achievement in Amelia's first year in this age group.
London Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill (Sat. 16th Nov.)
Senior Men: When the National cross country championships come to Parliament Hill, as they will in February, writes Clem Dixon, you have three things to contend with: mud, hills and congestion. At the London championships the field is smaller (468 finishers this year) so there is less congestion, and this year there was hardly any mud either, but the hills were still there! Bobby Babaker (18th) maintained his 100% record of being our first finisher at every race this season while Kyle Hurst (47th) and John O'Mahony (85th) had their best runs of the season. With James Macdonald (95th) also making the top 100 we had a four to score team in 12th place. Nineteen of us turned out for this one; another week and another new addition to the squad as we welcomed Italian Fabio Bizzi for his first experience of English cross country conditions.
