The Senior Women at Somerhill

Updated: Jan 10, 2021

The senior women gave another great performance at Somerhill. Again we came second in both the team of three and the team of six competitions with some excellent individual performances. It is a tribute to the growing depth of the squad across all the SW/masters age groups that differently composed teams produced the same results as in the previous match.

The course at Somerhill was significantly changed for the senior women which caused a bit of confusion not least to the team manager. However this did not put off Lucy Marlow and SW debutante Holly Dixon who quickly established themselves just behind the leaders. In the early stages they were joined by Megan Williams in her first race since her gap travels and Katie Saunders. Louise Knight, Christine Bond and Sue Dixon were not too far behind. As the race progressed the order changed. Lucy was still in front and running people down closely tracked in this by Holly. Lucy even managed to grin and wave for the camera.

They were rewarded by excellent sixth and eighth places. Meanwhile Louise was again running more strongly in the second half of the race overhauling team mate Katie and several others to come in 19th. They were followed by Christine and Sue who were also keeping each other in their sights. Both finished strongly. Rose Baker ignored coach Glynis’ advice (again)- Parkrun! Sally Carr and Jo Murphy were cruising along in their zone. Further down the field Maria Macdonald and Angela Ford were keeping each other company. Maria was pretty puzzled when Angela suddenly shot off. Which one of them had mistaken the course? It turned out that Angela had forgotten the warning about the changed finish – no longer a great downhill run but now with a sneaky extra hill. All in all it was agreed that the revised course was an improvement as the long far hill now only features once. The homemade cakes and the coffee cart were as good as ever.
