Dean Lacy was a comfortable winner of the senior men’s race, he broke clear towards the end of the second lap of the three lap course to finish 20-odd seconds clear of Tonbridge’s Ben Cole. Bayley Massey had another great run, following his 15th place at the last fixture with 9th this time (and 3rd Under 20) to take him up to 8th in the individual table. James MacDonald (39th) and David Reader (53rd) completed the 4-to-score team which was 5th (again).
Numbers were down on the previous fixture for a variety of reasons but we still had 14 finishers, Paul Ford was our 12th man home helping our 12-to-score team to 7th.
For the first time ever we had three runners in the over 70’s race (run in conjunction with the women’s race over 5k) and expectations were high as Ian Marshall, running just a week after his 70th birthday, has been in terrific form on the fells this summer. But things didn’t work out quite as expected: Richard Seabrook of Beckenham making a first appearance in the league since 2015 won the race and David Moorekite of Larkfield whom Peter Hadley has generally had the better of recently produced a storming run for 2nd leaving the Cambridge contingent to settle for 3rd, 4th and 5th.
It was a glorious day of racing on surely the best of the Kent League courses, the grounds of Somerhill School looked picturesque in autumn sunshine with the leaves of the trees on the turn from green to brown. The layout of the course and all of the organisation was immaculate as it always is here. And Dean capped a fine performance in the afternoon by being on the winning team in the Club quiz night at the clubhouse in the evening.
