Ian Marshall R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that we report the recent passing of Ian Marshall. He died on 4th September, just a month before his 80th birthday, after returning home following a short stay in hospital.

Despite suffering a stroke in late 2020 and subsequently being confined to a wheelchair, Ian maintained his witty personality and sharpness of mind. Although he was no longer able to compete, he continued to take a keen interest in the club and avidly followed the performances of fellow members.

In recognition of his services to the club, Ian was elected Club President for the year 2024–2025.

Ian took up running in the 1980s after retiring from playing Sunday league football. Shortly afterwards, he joined Cambridge Harriers, initially competing in road and cross-country events.

In the late 1980s, Ian, together with other adventurous members, formed the fell-running section of the club. He competed regularly in many of the classic races, including the Ben Nevis Hill Race, Borrowdale, Long Mynd and Snowdon.

Ian later branched out into ultra running, taking part on many occasions in the London to Brighton (54 miles), the South Downs 80 miles and, twice, the Grand Union Canal Race (145 miles).

Highlights of his running career include a marathon time of 2 hours 47 minutes, 8 hours and 1 second for the London to Brighton, for which his colleagues presented him with a box of After Eight mints and competing in 20 Ben Nevis Hill Races, just one short of the magical 21.

Ian will be greatly missed by his wife, Allison, his two sons, and his many friends, both past and present, from Cambridge Harriers.

Ian's funeral will take place on Monday 5th October, Bluebell Crematorium, Halstead, 1:45pm followed by a wake at the Malt Shovel, Eynsford.
